Painting, to Dyment, is her ticket to freedom. She finds the creative process to be simultaneously liberating and enlightening. The time spent in front of a canvas, brush in hand, enables her to dig into her psyche and discover what is within, while reflecting what she is feeling, seeing, smelling, and tasting in the atmosphere. Each and every painting, while an external reflection, also casts a momentary, but everlasting light into her interior being. She doesn't feel like it is successful unless she's left it there exposed for the viewer.
Dyment adjusts her palette to her subject matter and mood. This is why some paintings exhibit a vibrancy of color and attitude, and others are muted and moody. She reacts to both her external and internal environments.
Painting is both mentally and physically engaging. Dyment’s paintings often convey a sense of movement and her need to express her own physical involvement with the environment through her brush and onto the canvas. Her brushwork interprets that movement in gestures large and small. This is also indicative of her deeper appreciation of the life moving on around us and her need to impart that feeling to the viewer.
Her paintings celebrate the abundance and wonder of the natural world as a gift we can all access.
About the Paintings...
Cheryl Dyment draws her inspiration from the exterior world around her, no matter the time of day, or season. In her view, there is nothing that can come close to the experience of being on site, with easel set up and ready-to-go. She counts herself lucky to bear witness to nature’s ever-changing landscapes. Capturing the feel in the air, the light, and how it affects the chosen palette is her goal in any painting. How the light bends and stretches and transforms the shapes and natural elements that lie in view, fascinates endlessly. Making the choice to distill an entire movie into one clip is the challenge.
Dyment is struck by the constant movement of the natural world. Even in the most quiet and desolate spots, life is bubbling up around. While we are consciously unaware, the planet continues hurtling through space at speeds unfelt by us. With her brush, she conveys that movement. Each place in time has a special sense of atmosphere and light that is unique and very important to her painting. Her brushwork is central to shaping the images that she interprets on canvas while drawing the viewer into the experience.
Cheryl Dyment has lived most of her life on the North Shore of Boston (with time out for residency in New York City and Charlottesville, Virginia). Naturally, she finds herself painting the scenic vistas for which the area is known. More often, she will seek out the hidden, special places, or a unique perspective on a familiar spot for her paintings. She delights in finding what she refers to as the "disappearing landscape" and highlighting that in her work. She has also painted from trips to Ireland and Italy.
