...how I got here

"It’s great to know what I’m doing, now that I’ve grown up.

The first time I remember painting is when I was a toddler and woke up before anyone else in the house.  Someone had left some paints and a wooden box lying around.   I proceeded to paint my first landscape.  I remember painting a sunset with lots of yellow and red.  As a pre-teen wandering the coastline of Rockport, I used to pass the time by drawing on the boulders using bits of leftover charcoal found from a previous night’s cookout.  Throughout my school years, I was always involved in an art project.

Once I went to college, I left the art room behind and became an observer.  Meanwhile, I was married, relocated a few times, had a career, and most importantly, bore two wonderful sons.  I became a volunteer extraordinaire, trying desperately to do all that was expected to be a perfect mother and wife.  I learned that I was not so perfect, nor was this a perfect world.

My creative soul was thirsty for nourishment and I set out to find that person who dared to draw in the wild.  Once I gave myself permission, the decisions about 'what next' came easier.  After much deliberation, I finally understood that painting was the only thing that made sense to me.  I have worked and studied with talented painters and instructors, and will continue to seek enlightenment wherever it can be found: in a classroom, in the field, with a group, or on my own.  I live this life as an artist, 24/7, 365 days a year, and will continue to do so as long as I am here."

About the Paintings...

Cheryl Dyment considers herself a plein air painter, primarily.  She draws her inspiration from the exterior world around her, no matter the time of day, or season.  There is nothing that can come close to the experience of being on site, with your easel set up and ready-to-go. She counts herself lucky to bear witness to nature’s ever-changing landscapes.  Capturing the feel in the air, the light, and how it affects the chosen palate is her goal in any painting.  How the light bends and stretches and transforms the shapes and natural elements that lie in view, fascinates endlessly.   Making the choice to distill an entire movie into one clip is the challenge.

Dyment is struck by the constant movement of the natural world.  Even in the most quiet and desolate spots, life is bubbling up around.  While we are consciously unaware, the planet continues hurtling through space at speeds unfelt by us.  With her brush, she conveys that movement.  Each place in time has a special sense of atmosphere and light that is unique and very important to her painting.  Her brushwork is central to shaping the images that she interprets on canvas while drawing the viewer into the experience.

Cheryl Dyment has lived most of her life on the North Shore of Boston (with time out for residency in New York City and Charlottesville, Virginia).  Naturally, she finds herself painting the scenic vistas for which the area is known.  More often, she will seek out the hidden, special places, or a unique perspective on a familiar spot for her paintings. She delights in finding what she refers to as the "disappearing landscape" and highlighting that in her work.  She has also painted from trips to Ireland and Italy.

Commissions are accepted on a limited basis.
